Why I Love Radio

I, like most people, grew up listening to the radio in the car with my parents, and, like most kids, didn’t have a choice of what was played. The station we listened to the most was a local new country station, KX 94.7. We listened since it first aired when I was about 7. I listened all the time until I moved to Haldimand County when I was 12. We were kind of out of range for KX 94.7, so we moved stations to a country one out of Kitchener. I started listening to my kind of music. I was flipping through the stations and found a 60’s 70’s 80’s station called 92.9 The Grand. I listened to it when I worked on the lake doing construction, in my room, I even tuned in online from time to time. When I wanted to take a co-op class at a radio station, 92.9 was the closest place to go, it was right in Caledonia, a 20-minute drive, easy peasy, except it wasn’t. Over the Covid pandemic, they closed the office, kept the sign on the billboard, and moved into Hamilton with KX 94.7. I didn’t know they were the same company until I was researching what station I wanted to work at. I started doing things for the promo department at KX 94.7, I was told I would be able to do all these cool things the previous co-op student got to do like visit the transponder site, produce a commercial, and see the creative writing. While I got to see a little bit of things, like sitting in on the morning show, or seeing how music is scheduled, I was a little disappointed. It definitely still made me want to go into radio, but I felt like I didn’t quite get to decide what I liked the most. I usually just pulled events and put data into a spreadsheet.

About halfway through my placement, Emily, one of the promotions ladies, got pregnant, and they needed someone to fill her position. Dez, who was in the cruiser before me, was the best fit. She had been at the front desk and knew a lot of the ins and outs of what happened in promotions. That, however, left her position open. Instead of looking for someone and going through the hiring process, they saw I showed up on time every day, and I knew a lot about what went on, so with a weekend of training, I was solo in the cruiser.

I absolutely love this business, I’m really glad I’m working with Durham Radio Inc. and I know I’m going to do great on air. So make sure to follow along on my socials at MitchDotFM.
